Waste Management for MMDAs Launched

Prof Ernest Yanful
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology- Africa Institute of Sanitation and Waste Management (KAISWAM) has introduced professional programs in Sanitation, Waste and Urban Planning for workers in the Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.

According to Prof Ernest Yanful, Provost at KAISWAM, the main aim for the introduction of the courses was to address the professional capacity gaps in the sanitation and waste management sectors.

Speaking at the launch of the Postgraduate Diploma programs at the school’s campus at Ashalley Botwe, Nmai Djorn in Accra recently, Prof Yanful said the course was to bridge the gap between industry and academia.

‘What is unique here is that, the program is very specialized and it is very focused to prepare and train people to develop that capacity for the environmental and sanitation work in the country. We are hoping that not only the MMDAs but the waste providers would also be able to participate in the program.’

45 individuals from various regions, working with the MMDAs who were ushered into the 5 months course are expected to graduate with a certificate from KNUST. The course runs with 7 modules ranging from Urban Planning, Community Development to Project Mangement.

‘Once these students pass out, they will be able to understand the issues of sanitation in the country. This course will give them additional tools and enhancement to be able to do their work in the districts and the municipalities,’ he added.

Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the institute and executive of Zoomlion disclosed his outfit considered KAISWAM as a great institute that workers at the MMDAs should patronize.

‘We at Zoomlion consider this school as a niche area that we want to develop. The area of waste management has serious investment but tapping and using it to benefit society has not been achieved,’ Mr Agyepong noted.
