Uniformed Cop Robbed By 2 Nigerians

A driver in a private car has foiled two Nigerian robbers from escaping with an amount of GHc7,700 which they snatched from a policeman stationed at the Tema Marine Railway and Ports Department of the Police.

The robbers, Godfred Nwaiwu, 22, and Michael Diala, 43, are residents at the Chico Station, Accra, and their escape was thwarted at the Tema Main Harbour Roundabout, where the motorbike they used for the robbery was knocked down by a brave private car driver.

The Public Relations Officer of the Tema Regional Police, Command Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng told The Chronicle that the two robbers attacked the policeman after he had withdrawn GHc7,700 from a financial institution at Tema Community One.

She narrated that the policeman, after he had left the banking hall, met his long time friend at the Tema Main Harbour Roundabout and so he stopped to exchange pleasantries with him. The policeman had the money concealed in an envelope and riding from his blind side, Godfred Nwaiwu, snatched the envelope containing the money from the policeman, who is the complainant.

The suspects then sped off, meandering their way through vehicles. However, the policeman quickly raised an alarm that called for the bravado of the private car driver, who chased the robbers and eventually knocked them with his car. Sensing danger, Godfred, in whose custody the envelope was, scattered the money on the floor and bolted.

Nonetheless, an angry mob that had earlier set the robbers’ motorbike ablaze, then grabbed him and nearly set him ablaze too, but for the timely intervention of the policeman they had robbed from. ASP Obeng said Godfred and Michael were later arrested by the victim who sent them to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Regional Police Command, where investigations she said had been completed, adding that they would be arraigned before court soon.

A total of GHc6,340 was recovered from the suspects, she said. Conducting a spot search on the two, a knife was found on Godfred. On behalf of the Tema Police Command, She praised the private car driver for his bravery.
