Two Jailed Over Vodafone Cables

An unemployed man and his electrician accomplice have been sentenced by an Accra Circuit Court to eight years each after they both pleaded guilty to stealing 100 and 50 pairs of Vodafone cables.

The suspects, Frank Yaboah and Stephen Dassa were spotted by a taxi driver when they were carrying the cables but dropped them and took to their heels after the driver drove close to them.

They were put in a court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh and charged with stealing and causing unlawful damage.

They were consequently convicted on their own plea and sentenced to three years for stealing and five years for causing unlawful damage to the cables. Both sentences would run concurrently.

The facts of the case as presented by the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Michael Jubiok, are that the complainant is a taxi driver and a resident of Kaneshie Cocoa Clinic area while the accused persons are unemployed and electrician respectively.

According to him on November 16 2015 at about 3.30 pm, the taxi driver was on his usual rounds when he spotted the accused persons Yeboah and Dassa popularly called ‘Yellow’ at Kaneshie Big Boss Restaurant carrying 100 and 50 pairs of Vodafone cables.

He said the taxi driver then decided to drive towards their direction but when he got near, the suspects took to their heels and abandoned the cables.

The prosecuting officer stated that the driver becoming suspicious, chased them and raised an alarm and the suspects were arrested by some Good Samaritans who gave them a hot chase.

The prosecutor added that the suspects were taken together with the cables which were then bundled and sent to the Kaneshie Police as exhibits.

He said during investigations, Vodafone Headquarters were informed about the matter and they sent officials to the station who went and identified the cables as those of the company.

He stated that the suspects admitted the offence in their cautioned statements and were consequently arraigned after police concluded investigations.
