Transport Stations In Sekondi Takoradi Yet To Effect Increase In Transport Fares

Leadership of the various loading stations in the Sekondi – Takoradi Metropolis are yet to charge new transport fares after the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council increased fares by 15 percent.

Taxi ranks in particular want to be circumspect with their charges as they say any arbitrary charge will drive passengers away.

The 15 percent increase has been necessitated by increases in petroleum products announced on January 4, 2016 while the operators also took into consideration “cost of spare parts and maintenance, licensing, levies, charges and tolls.

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council deferred an increase due to then ongoing negotiations between government and TUC.

The increase is coming at a time when prices of petroleum products have been reduced.

But the increases have already taken effect. However some loading stations in Sekondi – Takoradi are not in a hurry to effect the changes.

At the Takoradi to Sekondi taxi rank close to the Zenith Hotel, the leadership said already passengers are not boarding taxis due to the fares.

They said they are waiting for trotro drivers to come out with their fares, based on which they will increase theirs.

At the Takoradi to Sekondi trotro station the drivers had also not increased their fares.

They explained to Modern Ghana that they were preparing for a meeting to include an old percentage increase to the recently announced one before they come out with a charge.

In connotation to this, the transport operators in Tarkwa Nsueam Municipal are also yet to hike transport fares.
