Togolese Gets 15 Years For Attempted Murder

THE TOGOLESE national who was arrested by the Keta police for asking a fetish priest at Abor in the Volta Region to kill a Ghanaian domiciled in Cote d’Ivoire, whom he owes some amount of money, has been slapped with a 15-year jail term with hard labour.

The convict, Komi Konou, a 35-year-old herbalist in Togo, collected an amount of 500,000 CFA from the Ghanaian under the pretext of curing the latter’s sick father.

But Konou failed to honour his promise of curing the father of the Ghanaian and rather sent him to a fetish priest at Abor for him to be killed so that the debt he (Konou) owed him (Ghanaian) could not be demanded.

He pleaded guilty to the charges of fraudulent breach of trust and attempted murder preferred against him when he was arraigned before the Aflao circuit court. He was subsequently jailed by the court, presided over by Ali Baaba Abature.

Prosecuting, Inspector Esperance Agbo told the court that a couple of months ago, the victim approached the accused person to help him get some medicine to cure his father.

According to Inspector Esperance Agbo, the convict assured the victim of helping him and succeeded in collecting an amount of 500,000 CFA from him.

After several weeks, the condition of the victim’s father rather deteriorated when he (victim) realized that the accused had failed to perform the task and started demanding his money.

Inspector Agbo further mentioned that the victim became fed-up and threatened the convict with police arrest. Konou, sensing danger, assured the victim that he would take him to another place for the medicine to be prepared for his father.

The prosecutor added that Konou rather went to see a fetish priest through the help of an accomplice who is on the run, demanding that the fetish priest should kill the victim so that he would stop worrying him for his money.

The prosecutor pointed out that the fetish priest agreed to do the killing and also charged the convict GH¢50,000. He (Konou), the prosecutor posited, paid 100,000 CFA, promising to pay the remaining balance after the victim had been killed.

He disclosed that the fetish priest decided to report the matter to the chief of the area and a formal complaint was made to the police.

According to him, when Komi Konou returned to pay the remaining money, he was arrested but denied the offence in his caution statement to police.

He was arraigned before the Aflao circuit court where he was found guilty and slapped with the sentence.
