Teacher Trainee Dies After Climbing Coconut Tree

Staff, students and teachers of the Akatsi College of Education in the Volta Region of Ghana have been thrown into a state of mourning since last Saturday after a student of the school met his untimely death.

The final year student who is awaiting his out-programme posting met his untimely death on Saturday, 26th September, 2015 when he fell off a coconut tree on the school campus. This incident has left the entire school in grief and shock.

The victim, who has been identified as Frank Worentetu, is believed to be in his early 20s. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Paul’s Hospital in Akatsi. His body is currently in the morgue of the hospital awaiting autopsy.

Although school authorities have refused to comment on the incident, DAILY GUIDE’s source stated that the level 300 student was climbing a coconut tree behind the mother block of the school.

He claimed that the student had climbed the tree to pluck some coconuts but could not explain what made him fall off. He said as soon as he fell, other students were attracted to the scene and ‘he was quickly rushed to the hospital but died upon arrival.’

He said ‘the entire school is sad and distraught by the incident because just last Friday, 25th September, 2015 (a day before his death) their out-programme postings were released.’

The Akatsi Police command, headed by Supt Dennis Fiakpui, confirmed the incident and added that they had begun investigations into the incident. DAILY GUIDE also gathered that school authorities have also sent a delegation to the parents of the deceased student.
