Eyewitness account indicated that Abelenya fell off the motor bike when it ran into a ditch while escaping.

He is now in the custody of the Odorkor police assisting in investigations.

Confirming the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Abraham Acquaye, the Odorkor District Police Commander, said the trader was attacked by Awangaba Abelenya, on October 6, 2015 with a sharp knife.

When the motorbike on which the suspect was sitting got close to the victim, who was walking along the street, the suspect got down and snatched her handbag which contained an amount of GH¢32.00. The police officer said Abelenya also took the victim’s mobile phone and jumped onto the motorbike which sped off.

The victim raised an alarm which pulled some residents to come to her aid.

He asserted that the motorbike was given a hot chase by some drivers and that in the process, it ran into a ditch, leading to the arrest of the suspect by the angry mob that was ready to lynch him. His accomplice however, managed to escape with the motorbike.

The police, he said, found the victim’s handbag on Abelenya together with the knife used for the operation.

During interrogation the suspect could not give the name of his accomplice to the police but claimed that the motor rider was a commercial rider whose service he had hired.

He however, admitted to the offence and was processed for court.

He has since been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by Justice Edward Tanor, an Accra circuit court judge.
