Rocky Dawuni: 10 Things You Should Know About Ghanas First Ever Grammy Nominee!

Ghanaian international reggae singer, Rocky Dawuni, has just made history by becoming the first ever Ghanaian to be nominated for the world’s most coveted music awards, the Grammy awards.

Here are ten things you should know about the award and this deadlocked singer from Bunbon in the Yendi District of Northern Ghana.

1. This is the 58th edition of the award and no Ghanaian has ever been nominated. If Rocky Dawuni wins, this will be the first time a Ghanaian has been nominated, and the first time a Ghanaian will win it.

2. Rocky’s album, ‘ Branches of the same tree ‘, is nominated in the category of Best Reggae Album. The other nominees in the category are Morgan Heritage, Jah Cure, Barrington Levy, and Luciano.

3. In the history of the Grammy, the Best Reggae album has always been won by Jamaicans. The only time a non-Jamaican won it was in 1986, when Steel Pulse, officially a British group, albeit with strong Jamaican roots, won it. If Rocky Dawuni wins, he will become the first ever winner without Jamaican roots.

4. Some of this year’s other Africa’s nominees are Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Wouter Kellerman, and Neville D from South Africa, and Jidenna and Angélique Kidjo from Nigeria and Benin respectively.

5. For younger Ghanaians who are not deep into reggae music, Rocky Dawuni’s breakout song is ‘ In Ghana , off his 1998 Crusade album. Without a doubt, Rocky is more popular abroad than at home, even today.

6. Earlier in his career, Rocky Dawuni was nicknamed ‘Ghana’s Bob Marley’ by a UK publication.

7. Rocky is one of the few African musicians with global influence. CNN named him one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars, he has worked for UNICEF, and the UN Foundation, and he is also the Global Ambassador for the Musicians Union of Ghana.

8. His album, branches of the same tree, draws influences from different parts of the world. The song, Nairobi is a melodious tribute to the capital of Kenya. Dawuni visited Kenya personally to shoot the video for this song. Jerusalem is a solemn tune that Rocky sings while walking through the holy land with a guitar in his hand.

9. Every year, Rocky Dawuni organizes a concert to mark Ghana’s Independence Day. He uses this concert to promote causes like clean water, girl child education, HIV AIDS, and more.

10. Rocky Dawuni’s manager is his wife, Cary Sullivan, a Los Angeles based entertainment professional. His record label is Cumbancha Records, and this album, ‘Branches of the same tree’, is his sixth album, and first one for Cumbancha records.
