Relocate us or lose our votes – displaced squatters to gov’t

Some displaced squatters and traders at Abossey Okai in Accra are questioning why authorities failed to relocate them prior to a four-day demolition exercise.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has demolished dozens of structures behind the ICGC Christ Temple to make way for a developmental project.

The demolition, which began last Saturday, under supervision of armed police officials, tore down structures which served as housing and businesses such as mechanic shops in the area.

Some of the frustrated squatters told JoyNews’ Michaela Anderson that they spent the night sleeping out in the open.

They bemoaned the loss of their livelihoods and roofs over their heads. Although they did not deny the fact that they had no legal reasons for settling on the land, they demanded to know why the Government would bring such untold hardship upon them.

The frustrated squatters demanded that Government relocate them or risk losing their votes, with some of them saying “we need a change”, and “things are not going well for us at all”.
