PPP To Embark On Demo Against Corruption

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will from next week organize a series of demonstrations to protest what they describe as widespread corrupt activities within the country’s governance system.

The demonstrations are aimed at supporting reforms in Ghana’s governance system and to make incorruptible leadership a reality in the country.

Speaking to Citi News, the Coordinator of the demonstration, William Duworkpor said the demonstrations seek to put pressure on government to turn the office of Attorney-General into an independent prosecutor’s office separate from the Ministry of Justice as well as separating Parliament from the Executive.

“Everybody who’s got some work to do with governance in this country is aware of the sweeping powers of the Executive. Recommendations have been made and they are still under consideration and it is part of our agenda to push it.”

During the campaign ahead of the 2012 elections, the presidential candidate of the PPP, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom promised to separate the executive arm of government from the legislature in order to reduce the powers of the former.

He also pledged to separate the Ministry of Justice from the Attorney General’s Department to make them effective.

And according to Mr. Duworkpor, the demonstrations will ensure that this vision is made a reality to ensure the smooth governance of the country and also to check any possible abuse of power.

“We are looking at a situation where we are going to remove the executive hand from the district assemblies and so on and so forth by making sure that the people at the districts decide who become the head of the administration of the area”
