Bolgatanga, Nov. 15, GNA – Political heads in the Upper East Region, has held a forum in Bolgatanga to deliberate on how to help improve upon the District League Table (DLT).

The DLT being implemented by the Centre for Democratic Development – Ghana (CDD-Ghana), in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is a social accountability mechanism tool, which seeks to improve upon responsiveness in social service delivery and empowerment of the people with voice and space to demand their due.

The forum which attracted stakeholders including key staff of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the District Chief Executives, Planners and District Coordinating Directors was aimed at soliciting support from the Assemblies to make the DLT more effective.

Addressing the stakeholders at the meeting, Mr Benedict Y Yugsah, the Research officer of CDD-Ghana, explained that the DLT measure six key indicators including Water, Health, Sanitation, Education, Security and good governance.

He stated that the main objective of the project is to ensure social accountability and transparencies, responsiveness, promote dialogue among actors of the Assemblies as well help the Government in local development.

He told the Municipal and District Chief Executives not to be bordered by the way their Assemblies are rated under the concept as the most important thing is the developmental gaps that are usually identified during the process, which could attract support.

‘Districts that are usually faced with some developmental challenges could get some support from development partners to help fill in the gap. Apart from also providing the platforms for citizens to engage you on the key social services, they stand the chance in either contributing to solving the problems or appreciating it better’, he said.

The Regional Minister, Mr James Zuugah Tiigah , whose speech was read on his behalf said apart from the project helping to identify the development inequalities among the Municipal and District Assemblies , it holds the assemblies more accountable in providing social services and infrastructural projects to the communities.

He lauded the efforts of UNICEF in complimenting government’s efforts and gave the assurance that the RCC together with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development would continue to strengthen their supervisory and coordinating roles to ensure that the project achieves the desired impact.

He impressed upon all the 13 political heads of the Districts to ensure that they collaborate to make the project implementation successful.

The Policy Assistant of UNICEF, Ms Afua Gyapomah, said the organisation views all the six indicators measured as very crucial to the welfare of families particularly children and women.

The results of DLT would be launched by the close of the year.
