Police Service not majority of bad eggs – Fritz Bafour

Chairman of the Defence Committee of Parliament, Mr Fritz Baffour has expressed his satisfaction with current investigations into the police recruitment fraud.

The Committee met with the IGP and his team last week over the recent police recruitment scam, which Mr Fritz Baffour explained the police service is keen to redeem its image, especially with recent reports alleging it to be the most corrupt institution in the country.

Mr Baffour assured that the police service was not made up of a majority of bad eggs, and insisted that it is only a minority operating unscrupulously.

The police service has got “very, very, very good men, men of integrity,” he said, adding that these are men who do not want to “dirty the cloth of the institution”.

Mr Baffour corrected earlier misconstrued reports which indicated that the Parliamentary committee would be instituting an independent investigative committee to take over the ongoing recruitment fraud investigation which has interdicted Director of Police Human Resources and Administration, COP Patrick Timbillah.

Although he was not at liberty to reveal the contents of police briefs submitted to the committee, he indicated that the police have been very supportive.

Mr Baffour told Joy News that the committee is set to meet early Tuesday morning to discuss the briefs provided so far.

He was of the opinion, contrary to some public sentiments, that at this moment the police are best equipped to conduct the investigation, adding that the time delay in assembling an independent body would increase the chances of a potential cover-up.

Fritz Baffour advised that the police be given “the first bite of the cherry” and added that the parliamentary committee, which has oversight in the investigation, will also take a look when the final report is submitted.
