Police Seize 80 Motorbikes

ABOUT 80 MOTORBIKES and ten tricycles (also known as ‘Aboboyaa’) have been impounded in Kumasi for various offences following a special operation by the police Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD).

The offences include people riding motorbikes without helmets, unregistered motorbikes and passing red lights.

The Ashanti Regional MTTD, led by its Commander, Supt Frank Abrokwah, carried out the operation at some locations in Kumasi on Saturday and Sunday.

The areas were Amakom Traffic Light, Suame, Bekwai Roundabout, Ahodwo, Airport Roundabout and A-Life Traffic Light at Adum.

According to Supt. Abrokwah, there had been several complaints lately of motor riders ignoring red light signals in the city among other offences.

He said DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, therefore ordered the central MTTD to embark on the exercise to bring sanity on the roads.

Supt. Abrokwah disclosed that all the 80 people arrested had been processed for court and had been fined, ranging from GH¢300 to GH¢400.

He gave the assurance that the exercise would not be a nine-day wonder, stressing that the MTTD would continually work to ensure sanity on the roads.
