Police justify killing of Adenta resident

The police administration has justified the gunning down to death of a young man Monday morning during a demolition exercise in Adenta, a suburb of Accra.

Accra Region Police PRO, DSP Freeman Tettey said the deceased wielded machete and resisted the demolition exercise, adding, the police men on duty had to use proportional force to subdue the attackers.

According to him, the identity of the deceased has been established and the family is in touch with the police to hand over the body to them.

He said the body will be handed over once an autopsy has been conducted.

Three others are in police custody for wielding weapons and resisting the demolition exercise.

DSP Tettey said they will be held for “obstruction” and all “manner of offences” once the investigations are completed.

Residents of Adenta Monday dawn, woke up to earth moving equipment owned by a private developer breaking down structures said to be illegally situated on the Aviation lands in Adenta.

The exercise was supervised by the Alfa Swat Unit of the Ghana Police Service. Some angry persons, who were left in awe by the exercise decided to resist the action by the police.

Commander of the unit, Supt T. K. Hlormenu, told Joy News’ Francisca Kakra Forson,  the police were left with no choice than to defend themselves.
