Oye Using LEAP Funds For Politics

A member of the Gender and Social Protection Committee of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, is alleging that sector Minister Nana Oye Lithur is using the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) for electoral gain.

According to the Awutu Senya East legislator, several appeals for the Minister to furnish the committee with the list of beneficiaries of the programme have fallen on deaf ears.

Speaking to Class FM’s parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan, Hawa Koomson said: “Last year, when their budget was ready and they came for the estimate, I asked her about this LEAP issue and we thought she was going to make those corrections. Up to now she has not corrected.”

“Ranking member Gifty Kusi asked her: ‘You claim you are giving the vulnerable LEAP, we do not know them, as members of the committee, and we need to know them’, and she [Nana Oye Lithur] said she would do the right thing the next time, but has repeated the same thing.

“We don’t know them. She should at least give us their names and telephone numbers then we talk to them and find out if it is true.

“You cannot just tell us you are giving to the vulnerable in my constituency and I don’t know them. What if the person takes from her and comes to me for another one while there are others who also need help?

“She should just make them available; she should let us know those who are receiving the LEAP.”

According to Hawa Koomson, only the Minister’s party members are benefitting from LEAP. “That is why she doesn’t want us to know.”

“In fact that is her aim, that is the agenda she has set, she wants to use LEAP to campaign and that is why she comes out to say she is serving a lot of people,” Ms Koomson alleged.

Meanwhile, Mrs Lithur has dismissed the allegations and promised to furnish the committee with details of beneficiaries of the scheme.
