Otumfuo Bereaved

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been bereaved.

Nana Kwaku Anougble III, king of Baoule in Cote D’Ivoire, who traditionally is a son of the Asantehene, died at the age of 60 years on August 29, 2015, after a prolonged illness.

A high-powered delegation from Baoule Kingdom, led by Nana Kouame Kouadio, came to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 16, to inform Otumfuo about the sad news.

The people of Baoule, including the highly-respected royal family, were part of the Asante Kingdom in Ghana who migrated to settle in Cote D’Ivoire some years back.

But despite their departure, the people of Baoule still consider themselves to be part of the Asante Kingdom and the Asantehene as their traditional leader (father).

The six-man delegation received the blessings of the President of Cote D’Ivoire, Ouattara and the family of ex-President Konan Bedie to relay the sad news to Otumfuo, in accordance with tradition.

In his succinct remarks, Nana Kouame Kouadio said the Baoule people are part of the Asante Kingdom therefore the need for them to inform Otumfuo before the funeral of the late traditional ruler could be held.

This was contained in a press release authored by Kofi Badu, Chief of Staff at the Manhyia Palace, the traditional seat of the Asantehene.

Otumfuo confirmed that the Baoule people were part of the Asante Kingdom who migrated to Cote D’Ivoire, pointing out that the late President Houphouet Biogny traced his ancestral root to Nsuta in the Asante Kingdom.

He expressed sadness about the sudden demise of the Bauole King, and gave his consent to the royal family to begin preparations for the burial. He assured the delegation that he would accord the late Nana Kwaku Anougble III a befitting burial.

Otumfuo hinted of plans to deepen ties between the people of Baoule and Asanteman, geared towards the rapid and proper development of the two kingdoms.
