Old Age Is Not Witchcraft-aaw

Advocacy of the Aged welfare (AAW) has refuted the perception of Ghanaians that old age and poverty has something to do with witchcraft.

According to the Executive Director of Advocacy of the Aged welfare, Mr. Nana Yaw Ofori, Poverty is the major cause of Aged abuse in our community. He stated that, “Most people in our community believes that poverty is the outcome of being a witch or wizard”.

“The rapid emergence of ‘fake prophet’ is also a major factor of the neglect of aged people and abuse on them. Fake prophet gives guidelines to their members not to get close or take care of their aged parents and that will redeem them from their suffering and they will get their breakthrough.

Speaking to student of Ngleshie Amanfrom Secondary School (NASEC), on the theme, ‘What are the factors that have accounted for the recent aged abuse and neglect in our society’, he said the poor and the old are the only the people seen as the witches and wizards in our society, why? He asked.

He disclosed that old age is a blessing from God and it takes only the blessed to grow old, so the society should get close to the aged and learn from their past experience.

“Irresponsible parenthood has also accounted to the neglect and abuse on the aged in Ghana; some parents in their youth refused their responsibility to take care of their children, so in their old age their children also neglect them to suffer”.

Mr. Ofori further cautioned students of NASEC to manage their youthful age well and also help the aged in their community in other for them not to suffer the same abuse.
