NGO wants details of gov’t proposed 1000 jobs for physically challenged published

A Kumasi-based non-governmental organization, Nyansapo Foundation wants government to publish details of supposed one thousand jobs for persons with disabilities.

In the 2016 budget, government proposed to create about 100,000 job opportunities for the youth with an additional 1,000 job opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Upon consultations, the Ashanti Regional chapter of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled says it is yet to receive official communication from government on the proposed project.

Disability and employment specialist at GSPD, Nana Sarpong Boakye wants government to furnish beneficiaries with details of the project.

As a first step, expects government to show much commitment towards the employment of persons with disability by making adjustments at public offices to facilitate access by persons with disability.

“Some of the government departments have not introduced the adjustments that you facilitate the employment of disabled people…if a physically disabled is employed and asked to work in storey building. How are they going to do that”. He quizzed.

He is expecting government to involve courses on disability in the curriculum of teacher trainees for effective training of children with disability.

Meanwhile, the NGO is exploring ways to create income-earning opportunities for persons with disability in agriculture.

The initiative is meant to reduce the dependence of the physically challenged on relatives and other members of the public for survival.

According to Nana Sarpong Boakye, potential beneficiaries will receive training in less labour intensive ways of fish and animal farming.

Founding member of the NGO, Dr. Ernest Kwarko also called on government to create a conducive business and physical environment for private businessmen to employ the disabled.
