Newmont Akyem Mine Assists Needy But Brilliant Students

Newmont Golden Ridge Ltd. (Akyem mine) has offered scholarship assistance to 938 students at a cost of 1,017,048.37 cedis under the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation(NAkDeF) since its establishment June last year.

Communications and External Relations Officer, Oduro-Kwarteng Marfo disclosed this during the annual end of year press briefing/soiree for Eastern regional media at Capital view hotel, Koforidua.

According to him, the scholarship programme supports brilliant but needy students within the Akyem mine communities.

“NAKDeF has successfully implemented a community scholarship programme for secondary, vocational, technical and tertiary students of the various Akyem mine host communities” he stressed.

Mr. Marfo stated that plans are already underway to commence an apprenticeship programme to equip community members with alternative livelihood skills for their economic empowerment.

“NAkDeF has officially cut sod to begin over 15 projects to be undertaken within the Akyem mine communities” he added.

He said due to the current power outages(Dumsor) was a challenge to their operations, his outfit has commissioned 14 megawatts of temporary power generation to supplement power supply from the national grid.
