More Teenage Pregnancy Cases Recorded

The Dormaa Central Municipal Health Directorate in the Brong-Ahafo region last year recorded 418 abortion cases out which 78 were teenagers.

This means that abortion cases among teenagers in the municipality has dropped from 102 in 2013 to 78 in 2014.

The Health Directorate again recorded 492 teenage pregnancies last year as against 488 in 2013.

Madam Florence Nzilanye Iddrisah, the Municipal Health Director, announced this at Dormaa-Ahenkro during a float to increase awareness on sexual and reproductive health and rights among adolescents.

The float was organized by the Ghana Education Service, National Youth Authority and Ghana Health Service, with sponsorship from Futures Group, an NGO under the DFID Ghana Reproductive Health Project.

Madam Iddrisah noted that the phenomenon is highly unacceptable and needed pragmatic effort by all stakeholders in reversing it.

The Health Director attributed the ever increasing in teenage pregnancy and abortion cases in the Dormaa Municipality to lack of knowledge on reproductive health.

She explained that the health directorate in collaboration with Ghana Education Service, National Youth Authority and the Dormaa Municipal Assembly have intensified public awareness to help control the situation.

The Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive , Gordon Asubonteng , said sexual reproductive health (srh) of adolescent has been overlooked by duty bearers and those working on srh.

This, according to him, had left adolescents as the most marginalized groups when it comes to srh services

Mr. Asubonteng asked the students to take their studies seriously and refrain from social vices such as sexual immorality that has tendency to put their future in jeopardy.
