Mahama Fulfills Pledge To Cab Driver

The Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah has handed over the key to a two-bedroom apartment at Borteyman to the Taxi driver who risked his life to knock down two armed robbers who robbed the Koala Shopping Mall of huge sums of money and had taken off on a motor-bike on January 9, 2016.

The taxi driver (name withheld for security reasons), pursued the two armed robbers by knocking down the motor-bike carrying them; a soldier passing by came to the rescue and retrieved the monies robbed from the shopping centre in Osu, a suburb of Accra. According to Dr. Agyemang Mensah, most people think security is the job of the police and other institutions, so for a taxi driver to take such a bold decision to aid the police to apprehend these armed robbers, he deserved everything he was getting.

He said “maintenance of law and order is not an exclusive preserve of the police, as good citizens all of us must be involved in maintaining law and order”, adding the nation was grateful to him for what he did.  He said this when he handed over a dummy key to the apartment, to the brother of the taxi driver, Ebenezer Kortey at Borteyman yesterday morning.

Dr. Agyemang Mensah said, the ceremony was to show government’s appreciation to a noble citizen of Ghana, adding that the action he took contributed to the apprehension of the armed robbers. He explained that although the taxi driver has already received other prizes from the shopping mall and the Ghana Police Service, the President, John Dramani Mahama is also fulfilling his part of the pledge by giving him a fully furnished two bedroom apartment.

He encouraged the public to also let security be of importance to them and not to always wait on the police but should help whenever they can. Dr. Agyemang Mensah said the gesture of the taxi driver should encourage all Ghanaians to help in maintaining law and order. The brother of the taxi driver, Ebenezer Kortey, who is a welder by profession could not hide his pleasure for the kind gesture of the president and thanked the sector minister for presenting the apartment to him.
