The Member of Parliament for the Manso-Nkwanta constituency, Hon Grace Addo has called for a concerted effort from all stakeholders to wage a frantic war against the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the country.

According to her, the practice infringes upon the rights of victims since it is performed on mostly them by their families during the childhood days.

The MP said these on the floor of Parliament in support of a statement made by a Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon Dela Sowah to mark the World Day of Zero tolerance of FGM.

She noted with deep concern that, the negative health and social implications of the act on the victims cannot be quantified hence the urgent need to make it unattractive to practitioners by putting in place very punitive measures.

Hon Grace Addo expressed worry that some parents still sends their wards across the borders of the country to perform the act on them and called for severe punishments to those caught in the cross border crime to serve as deterrent to others.

The MP urged the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to institute educational awareness campaigns against FGM throughout the country.

She also challenged the security agencies to intensify checks at the borders whiles effectively enforcing existing laws against the canker.

Statistics shows that FGM in Ghana is most prevalent in Upper West and East regions with 41% and 28% rates respectively.
