Kumasi Residents Eats Unwholesome Meat

Some of the animals slaughtered under unhygienic conditions at the abattoir

Residents of Kumasi, especially those residing at Suame stand the risk of contracting diseases from meat that have been processed at the Suame Abattoir.

Goat, sheep and cow are slaughtered by the butchers and processed under unhygienic conditions at the abbattoir.

Sam Akintaba, Chairman of the Suame Abattoir, said that the facility lacks key amenities so they slaughter the animals on the ground.

According to him, owing to the lack of a shed at the facility, workers at the abattoir work in the scorching sun.

Mr Akintaba admitted that the unhygienic conditions at the abattoir pose great danger to people that consumed meat processed from the place, saying ‘we have no other option.’

He said they have appealed to the Member of Parliament (MP) of Suame, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to assist them to upgrade the facility but their plea have fallen on deaf ears.

Mr Akintaba disclosed this to the media when Francis Dodovi, a parliamentary aspirant contesting in the NDC primaries in Suame, visited the Suame Abattoir to get first hand information on Sunday morning.

He called on stakeholders at Suame to come the aid of workers at the Suame Abattoir to help improve conditions at the place.

Dodovi, who led a health walk dubbed, ’1000 Walk for Suame’, on the day, was unhappy with appalling conditions at the Suame Abattoir.

He criticized the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) for not addressing the concerns of people working at the Suame Abattoir, noting that it was high time people voted into political office cared about the electorate.

Dodovi said if given the nod in 2016, he would make sure the development was extended to people irrespective of political or religious affiliation.

He pledged to support efforts aimed at upgrading the facility soon, saying ‘I can’t wait till I become MP before I offer help to them.’
