KMA Beats Budget Deadline

THE KUMASI Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has been able to approve its budget for 2016, barely 24-hours before the deadline to do so elapsed, after a marathon General Assembly Meeting in Kumasi on Friday, October 30.

The newly inaugurated assembly had failed, all this while, to approve and submit its budget for 2016 to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, as mandated by the laws of the state.

All Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country, including the KMA, are mandated by law to submit their approved budget for 2016 to the Ministry of Local Government, latest by October 31, this year.

The KMAs failure to approve its budget for the upcoming year was mainly due to the absence of a Presiding Member to call and preside over meetings for the budget to be approved.

The important meeting was however, held on Friday, October 30 following an amendment of the Model Standing Orders for District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies.

The amendment, which was signed by the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Collins Dauda paved way for a member of the assembly to be elected through simple majority voting system to act as a Member Presiding just for Friday’s meeting.

In line with his directive, the house unanimously endorsed one Adusei Bonsu, Dadiesoaba Assemblyman as Member Presiding for the marathon meeting, graced by Kojo Bonsu, the Kumasi Mayor.

Godwin Okumah Nyame, the KMA PRO told DAILY GUIDE that issues such as draft annual budget for 2016, fee fixing for 2016 and annual action plan for 2016, were attended to by the members of the assembly.

He said projections were made and eventually approved in the three aforementioned topics, lauding the holding of the meeting, especially the approval of the budget, saying ‘it is good because the KMA needs money to develop the city.’
