KATH Implements Measure To Fight Cancers From Children


The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has set a measure to eradicate child cancer at the launched of Ashanti region branch of the Ghana parents Association of children with cancer (GHAPACC) on Monday November 10th in Kumasi-Ghana.

The launching was organized by KATH Paediatric Cancer Unit in collaboration with the World child cancer UK based organization, aiming to bring together and console parents, whose children are suffering from cancer and to raise funds to support these children.

The program also aimed at focusing on children suffering from the disease cancer to help cure it from children to survive, but not adult alone.

In this, the cancer unit has realized that, though there are different king of cancer found in adult thus, breast cancer, prostate cancer among others, but children also suffer from cancer but little attention is giving to them.

The chairman of the occasion professor S.O Asiama a lecturer from KNUST speaking thanks KATH cancer unit and the World child cancer for initiating this Association. He said, children suffering from cancer in the country is on rampant and needs urgent necessary attention.

He said, is a collective effort by all individuals and corporate institutions to come together and support these children with their strength and money because the cure is very expensive which is sometimes difficult for some parents to pay.

He said, these children will grow and become good leaders to serve the country. From 1995 to date, over 9,000 children have been affected by cancer which most that was realized as early as possible was cured.

Dr. Lawrence Osei-Tutu paediatrician specialist and a member of paediatric society of Ghana, in an interview with this site said, 8 out of10 children who get cancer survive if giving the necessary attention.

According to him, from 1998 the KATH paediatric units have recorded over 2,000 children with cancer cases between the ages of 3 years and 15 years, which most of them survived. Therefore, the need to set this association to house and console this children, parents to help avoid further spreading of the disease.

However, the operations manager of World Child Cancer Liz Burns in an interview says, is time we work together to eradicate cancer from our children. She said, the children is our future therefore, need to be taking care of.

LIs burns added that, the World child cancer will continue to support children with the disease to help eradicate or reduce it from affecting children. She said, the work needs serious publicity to create awareness and to educate the public on it.

Meanwhile, the president of GHAPACC Mr. Robert Ako also advised parent to take very good care of their wards to fight the disease. He encourage parents that, the disease is curable therefore, should bring their wards to KATH for such suspected cases.
