Joy Ballot Box; Cape Coast has decided

The Cape Coast is considered a swing region, a king maker in Ghana’s unpredictable elections. And with eight months to go for a character defining elections in 2016, there was no better region than Cape Coast to kick start the maiden Joy FM political programme- The Ballot Box.

On Friday, the University of Cape Coast was turned into Electoral Commission’s polling centre with hundreds of residents, students, parliamentary aspirants voting, not for candidates but for issues they consider important ahead of the elections.

The issues were diverse-economy, unemployment, corruption, energy, education, health and oo how handsome the president is.

Each issue, the voters insisted was important and would be the determining factor as to which candidate to vote for in November.

And when voting ended at 5:00 pm the verdict was unanimous- Cape Coast is ready for election 2016.

The residents will cast their ballots to either retain the Mahama led NDC government which has been in power for eight years, or replace him with either Nana Akufo-Addo of the NPP, Ivor Greenstreet of CPP, Dr Edward Mahama of the PNC all of whom are finding opposition a sorry place to be.

And with skill and verve, the improvised Electoral Commissioners, led by Joy FM’s Evans Mensah, Super Morning Show host Kojo Yankson and ATL FM’s Mary Ama Bawah made a rather difficult job look simple by teasing out the salient issues raised by the voters and putting them to the parliamentary aspirants.

Wherever politicians are, there will be promises and the promises came in thick and fast. Some parliamentary aspirants for different constituencies in the Central Region promised instant jobs for jobless people; others promised to put money into people’s pockets.

It was exciting; it was interactive. It was politics of issues in the Central Region. A must listen to programme.
