JJ To NDC: ‘Reignite Anti-Corruption Spirit’

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has charged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to reignite the probity and accountability ideals of the 31st December Revolution.

Speaking at the 34th anniversary of the 1981 revolution that toppled Dr Hilla Limann of the Third Republic, Mr Rawlings said in a few months, he, together with party members, who believe in the ideals of the June 4, 1979 revolution, will reconvene to light the June 4 flame and expressed hope that by then, people of the same revolutionary colour would show up.

In his words: “We need to reignite the spirit. The spirit to fight corruption, the spirit to contain greed, selfishness, otherwise we may not be able to reach our destination.”

He called for a closer look at those, who profited from the change in government in the year 2000.

“The time has come for us to start looking at those, who profited from the change of the colour starting from 2000. We should be asking ourselves what happened, especially from the year 2000,” Mr Rawlings said.

The ceremony was held at the Revolutionary Square, opposite the Flagstaff House. Some prominent people who joined the former military ruler to mark the day are Minister of Fisheries, Sherry Ayittey; Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, and the governing party’s deputy General Secretary, George Lawson.

The lighting of the perpetual flame for this year’s anniversary was done by ACP Nuhu Jango, the Nima Divisional Police Commander, flanked by two female officers: Eva Opare Addo and Mavis Tetteh.
