‘I have not been disrespectful to my party’ Nii Noi justifies going independent

Defeated parliamentary aspirant in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Klottey Korle primaries, Valentine Nii Noi Nortey, says his decision to go independent is not to disrespect the party.

“I challenge any leader of this party to come out and say I have been disobedient and disrespectful”, Nii Noi Nortey told Joy News’ Francis Abban after he announced his decision to leave the party.

Nortey said “All I have done is to obey them but as it stands now there is no way I am going to obey them and leave my people behind”

The aggrieved aspirant says the party left him no choice after bigwigs schemed to get him out in favour of Philip Addison, a lawyer of the 2016 presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The NPP Klottey Korle parliamentary primaries has been a roller-coaster of a parliamentary race after Nii Noi Nortey won the first primaries in August 2015, but lost a re-run ordered by the party following a bitter dispute between Philip Addison and Nii Noi Nortey.

There have been frantic behind-the-scenes negotiations to get the former constituency chairman to rescind his decision.

Nii Noi Nortey believes the party pushed him out because he has no professional clout or social standing as Philip Addison.

“Party bigwigs schemed and kicked me out because I am not a lawyer, I do not belong to the high-class society because I am a nobody. Nii Noi has no name in the party” he expressed disappointment.

Nortey told journalist at a press conference Wednesday, that the party bigwigs can take the party and that he is taking the grassroots.

He is believed to be a formidable grassroots person according to party insiders in the constituency.

“He is not an ordinary person,” Greater Accra regional chairman of the NPP Ishmael Ashittey told Joy News’ Top Story Wednesday evening.

Although Ishmael Ashittey would not conclude the party will lose the Klottey Korle contest in November, the chairman said the aggrieved NPP man poses a considerable threat to the party’s chances should Nii Noi persists on this path.

This is because Nii Noi would still be seen as an NPP candidate although he has gone independent.

He explained he had decided to speak to Nii Noi Nortey on Wednesday only to hear of him announcing his breakaway.

“It is up to us to talk him out of the decision” the NPP Greater Accra Chairman stated.
