I Am The David Of NPP- Says Chairman Wontumi

A LEADING contender of the Ashanti Regional chairmanship position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako has drawn comparison between his emergence in the race to that of King David in the Bible, saying he is being chosen by God to lead the battle in the stronghold of the party to victory in the 2016 elections.

Chairman Wontumi, as he is popularly called, says he takes inspiration from 1 Samuel verse 17 in the Bible, where young David, a virtually unknown shepherd was chosen by God through Samuel to lead the Israelites in a battle against the Philistines.

His Biblical assertion follows suggestions from some adversaries that the aspirant is young and inexperienced, compared to his main contender, who has spent the last 16 years in Parliament as a legislator.

But the aspirant, who is highly tipped to win the slot at the party’s January 24 Congress, has laughed off the suggestion, saying the assertion is only a figment of people’s imagination.

Making a strong case of his ability at a meeting organized by some colleague contestants to endorse his candidature, Chairman Wontumi stated emphatically that there was no one at the moment, who is more capable of leading the party in the Ashanti Region than him, bragging that he has got the ability and the wherewithal to handle affairs of the NPP ahead of the 2016 elections.

Amongst the contestants who openly endorsed his candidature included Regional Youth Organizer aspirants, Justice Koduah and Dennis Kwakwa, Joseph Owusu Boakye, aka Abito, and Opoku Mensah, both aspirants for Regional Secretary, Nana Ama Ampoma, regional women’s organizer aspirant, constituency chairmen and  leading party activists and  aspirants.

Boasting of his financial prowess, Chairman Wontumi indicated that if there were only two people in the party who had made significant financial contribution to the party’s growth and development in the last two years, he would either be first or second.

‘It is amazing when people say I am young and inexperienced; who is more experienced, the one who sat aloof and watched the NDC steal the elections or the one who made unquantifiable financial contribution to support the party’s campaign,’ he queried.

According to the aspirant, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) allegedly won the 2012 elections because of financial influence and manipulations, a phenomenon he said, he was ready to march boot for boot if given the nod to lead the party in Ashanti.

The aspirant, who has already vowed to secure 80% of votes for the party in the region, pledged he would resign his post if he failed to achieve the feat, further promised to snatch the four seats currently held by the NDC in the Ashanti Region.

Chairman Wontumi swore that he would work hard to ensure that all the four parliamentary seats of the NDC, namely Asawase, Ahafo Ano North, New Edubiase and Drobonso, were recaptured by the NPP to bolster the party’s chances in the 2016 elections.

Meanwhile, the aspirant has once again made do his promise to bankroll the party’s activities by doling out another GHc20,000.00 to cover all expenses involving sale of nomination forms for the regional competition.

This follows initial GH¢45,000 which he paid few months ago to cater for the polling station and constituency nomination forms.

The aspirant additionally disclosed at the meeting that he has acquired a two-storey building at Asokwa to be used as the Regional Headquarters of the party whether he wins the seat or not.
