Human Trafficker Busted

The managing director of Ibadams Ghana Travel and Tours Limited at Kwesimintsim, near Takoradi in the Western Region, Ibrahim Adams, has been nabbed by the police and remanded into prison custody by a Takoradi circuit court for human trafficking.

The accused person will reappear before the court on November 10, this year.

Supt Reuben Asiwoko, Western Regional Crime Officer who disclosed this to DAILY GUIDE, said that in July this year, Ibrahim Adams allegedly trafficked one Hajaratu Issaha, 28, to Kuwait in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) under the pretext of getting her a job with attractive salary.

According to the regional crime officer, on arrival in Kuwait, Hajaratu’s passport was seized and ‘was made to work as a house help day and night without receiving allowance or salary. In the process, she fell sick and managed to call the accused to make arrangement for her return home but Ibrahim Adams refused.’

Supt Asiwoko mentioned that while the victim was making every effort to return to Ghana, the agent in Kuwait, one Mohammed Nawfer Abdul Lathif, persistently called Hajaratu’s family members in Ghana demanding $2,000 before releasing her to come back to her home country.

Suspect Traffics Nurse
Supt Asiwoko told DAILY GUIDE that the accused person once approached a registered nurse and told her that someone in Kuwait needed some nurses to work with but needed GH¢2,800 for the processing of the travelling documents.

He claimed that on July 28, this year, the accused called the nurse and informed her that her visa was ready. The accused managed to take the amount of GH¢2,800 from the nurse and gave her the travelling date.

According to Supt Asiwoko, when the date was due, the nurse called Ibrahim Adams and he gave the nurse another date and kept on telling her stories. The nurse became fed-up and told the accused to cancel the trip and refund her money but Adams insisted that the money was non-refundable.

The regional crime officer pointed out that in the month of September this year, the accused managed to process the needed documents of the nurse which enabled her to travel.

‘On arrival, the nurse was also made to work as a house help after her passport had been seized. She was made to undergo medical check-up and the result showed that she was one month pregnant. She was asked to terminate the pregnancy but she refused and insisted coming back home,’ Supt Asiwoko revealed.

The nurse then had to call her husband in Ghana who bought the plane ticket and managed to send it to the wife in Kuwait before she could return and later reported her ordeal to the police.

The police officer indicated that the police mounted a search for the Ibrahim Adams was arrested on November 3, 2015.
