Help eradicate poverty in the Region- Minister

Cape Coast, March 4, GNA – The new Central Regional Minister, Mr. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, said on Thursday that it would take a concerted effort to curb poverty which had become a vicious scourge among the people of the Central Region.

He has therefore appealed to the people in the Region to give him the necessary support as it was his vision to work tirelessly to completely eradicate the menace from the Region.

Speaking at a short handing-over ceremony to mark his official assumption of office in Cape Coast, Mr. Ricketts-Hagan expressed dismay that notwithstanding the vast natural resources that abound in the Region, which could be exploited to boost its development, it had been ranked among one of the poorest in the country.

He said it was surprising for a Region which prided itself as the citadel of education to have a high illiteracy rate whilst its economic status was nothing to write home about.

Mr. Ricketts-Hagan, the fifth Regional Minister since 2012 pledged to draw strategic programmes to put together the rich human resources available to help harness and develop the Region’s natural resources to improve its economic and social status.

He said he would complete the numerous projects initiated by his predecessor for the people in the Region to renew their fate in the NDC government and retain them in the November general election.

The out-going Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, called on the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) members to give the new minister all the needed support for him to succeed.

He expressed his gratitude to staff and management of the RCC for a cordial and loving relationship that they exhibited during his reign as Regional Minister.

Mr. Samuel Oppong, District Chief Executive for Agona West and the Dean of the MMDCEs in the Region, expressed gratitude to the out-going Minister and assured the new one of their unflinching support.
