GNFS Sanctions Regional Commander

The management of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has sanctioned the Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of the Service and his second-in-command following an enquiry into a DAILY GUIDE report that personnel were levied GH¢20 each towards a dinner for the visiting Chief Fire Officer.

Both officers have also been transferred and ordered to refund monies collected from personnel.

The Chief Fire Officer, Dr. Brown Gaisie, soon after reading the story, empanelled a committee to probe the authenticity of the report and to recommend sanctions against the officers, should the report be veracious.

The GNFS headquarters has according to a release from its public relations department, ordered that ‘the Regional Fire Officer ensure that all the monies collected are refunded to the personnel concerned and appropriate returns submitted to the Ghana National Fire Service Headquarters.’

Furthermore, appropriate measures are to be put in place to ensure sensitization in the region so as to avoid future occurrence of such unfortunate incidents, the release pointed out.

The release indicated that Regional Fire Officers had been warned to desist from such unconventional practices, pointing out that ‘in the event of any repetition, the appropriate measures as stipulated in the Fire Service Regulations, Legislative Instruments (L.I) 1725 (2003), Part I Section (1) would be applied.’

A lot of education was neither carried out nor Headquarters notified prior to the collection of the money from the personnel, the report which was submitted to the Chief Fire Officer, established.

The collection of the monies from the personnel the report noted, ‘was unethical and unprofessional since it is not the practice of the Service to request personnel to contribute money towards the execution of official assignments.’
