Giba Set To Establish A tower Pack To Shield Media Houses Against The Power Crisis

The Executive Council of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) is set to roll out an initiative to give relief to media houses reeling under the current power crisis.

The “Tower Pack” initiative will house a central power plant to supply power to media houses within a particular catchment area.

The move comes on the back of the worsening power crisis which GIBA officials say has resulted in huge revenue losses in the media industry due to the overreliance on gen sets.

President of GIBA, Akwasi Agyemang, tells Luv News the Tower Pack Complex will house a high voltage plant to supply alternative power to media houses within a central location.

Mr. Agyemang will not give any timelines but says the association is in talks with some tower companies to build a tower pack.

This he believes will reduce production cost drastically in the media industry.

“Some gen sets are breaking down because they overrun for days on end and so the need for the Tower Pack. In South Africa for instance, Sentech does all the transmission issues for broadcasters so that media houses can focus on programming. The situation is however different in Ghana. In a particular catchment area, one could locate a cluster of media houses such as the Multimedia Group, Net 2, Etv, Happy and Citi Fm among others. So if all these media houses could collocate and be on one on gen set, the cost of production would go down” Mr. Agyemang told Luv Fm’s John Teye.

Mr. Agyemang also encouraged members to consider other alternative sources of energy especially solar.

He proposed the initiative at the association’s 9th annual meeting in Kumasi.

GIBA is also set to acknowledge the efforts of media practitioners through a new Awards Scheme to be named “The Microphone Awards”.

Mr. Agyemang says the “Awards Scheme” will to seek to address concerns that the existing media awards schemes do not reward practitioners outside Accra and Kumasi.
