Ghana’s peace has nothing to do with Afari Gyan – Kofi Jumah

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has asked that people refrain from attributing the country’s peace to Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr Afari Gyan.

He said Ghana has been able to maintain peace due to the political tolerance and maturity of political parties in the country.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Mr Jumah said instead of celebrating Dr Afari Gyan, Ghanaians should rather ensure that he is sanctioned because his actions do not “deserve honour from society.”

He noted that the arrogance and incompetence of the EC Chair has contributed largely to the botched district level elections.

The elections would have been successfully held if Dr Afari Gyan respected the laws of the country, exercised patience and waited for only three days for the Constitutional Instrument (CI) on the district level elections to mature before he proceed with the nominations, he said.

He said he finds unforgivable that a huge sum of money will be spent to run an election but no value has been received on it.

Mr Jumah believes that Dr Afari Gyan should be punished for the loss, to serve as a deterrent to successive chairs of the Commission.

He said the EC Chair has taken for granted the privilege bestowed on him by the people of Ghana and must not be allowed to go scot-free.

A charge of causing financial loss to the state, in his view, is an appropriate way to deal with the situation.

A 7-member panel of Justices on Friday February 27, 2015, in a unanimous decision ordered the EC to suspend the elections because it was unconstitutional.

The EC Chair revealed to Parliament yesterday, when he was summoned to explain reasons behind the botched elections, that the Commission spent GHȻ317 million on the process and will require an additional GHȻ90 million for reorganization of the district elections.
