Fighting corruption at GYEEDA: Applaud Manasseh not Mahama – Egbert Faibille Jnr

Lawyer and senior journalist Egbert Faibille Jnr says President John Mahama does not deserve any praise for tackling rot at Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) because he had no choice in the face of overwhelming evidence of corruption.

Joy FM’s Manasseh Azure, an investigative journalist who broke the story and provided evidence of financial malfeasance at GYEEDA should take the plaudits coming his way, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) man said.

He was speaking on Joy FM and Multi TV’s Saturday political analysis programme Newsfile discussing government’s latest move to deal with a crisis of corruption at the government-run agency.

A former National Coordinator of the GYEEDA, Mr. Abuga Pele and the Chief Executive of Goodwill International Group (GIG), Philip Akpeena Assibit, appeared before the Financial Court in Accra to answer a total of 19 charges for their roles in the GYEEDA scandal uncovered by JOY NEWS.

Both men have denied the charges and have been granted bail.

Government has been receiving public backlash for months for what many perceive as feet-dragging by government in bringing to book, officials cited for wrongdoing at GYEEDA.

Two demonstrations have hit government and the doubting Thomases have especially been in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In response, President Mahama who has described corruption as “mass murder” has kept assuring Ghanaians he will deal with the matter only Ghanaians should give him time and allow institutions to work.

The courts have started working on the matter after the Attorney-General filed for prosecution. The case will continue after February 11th.

Following the commencement of criminal prosecutions, political functionaries and communicators of the governing party NDC have been praising the President for showing commitment to fight corruption under his watch.

A Presidential staffer James Agyenim Boateng says the latest move shows “the President has a muscle to fight corruption and bring a closure to this matter”.

But a surprised Accra-based lawyer, Egbert Faibille Jnr shot back. “When you are presented with a smoking gun, what can you do, Manasseh Azure brought evidence to the face of the president that this rot has been going on under your watch”, he said.

“The president doesn’t deserve any commendation for this….. the real macoy is Manasseh Azure” “I would have applauded the president if on his own steam, he had one morning issued a statement that it had come to his attention from his own investigations”, Egbert said.

According to him, political appointees like James Agyenim Boateng have no other choice than to applaud the president but for the NPP man and “as a tax-paying Ghanaian I will not applaud the president when you are presented with a smoking gun” Egbert insisted.

Manasseh Azure Awuni, a senior broadcast Journalist with Joy FM and 2012 GJA Journalist of the Year spent weeks putting together evidence of financial malfeasance at GYEEDA.

His work resulted in the setting up of a ministerial committee by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to look into the matter. The report was forwarded to the president who after studying it, issued an action plan to be implemented by the Attorney-General’s Department.
