Farmers Fight Over Cocoa Beans

Two aged men in critical conditions are currently battling for their lives at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital after they allegedly wounded each other over cocoa beans.

The two cocoa farmers – Kwabena Ofori, 60 years of age, who lives at Praso, while Yaw Owusu, 53, a resident of Bisiase, all in the Kwahu South District of the Eastern Region – were reported to have inflicted the wounds with machetes during a dispute at a village called Kwame Akroma.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that Kwabena Ofori last Saturday went to his farm and detected that his cocoa beans had been stolen and went to Yaw Owusu to accuse him of stealing the beans.

According to sources, Opanin Yaw Owusu became infuriated and began to insult Opanin Kwabena Ofori over the wrong accusation. He allegedly went for a machete and slashed the side of Opanin Ofori’s head. The latter reportedly retaliated by mercilessly inflicting a machete wound on the other’s hand.

The police, led by Opanin Yaw Owusu, went to the scene to convey Opanin Kwabena Ofori to the Atibie Government Hospital for treatment but the hospital after giving both of them first aid treatment, referred Kwabena Ofori and Yaw Owusu to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital and the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital respectively for further treatment.

The Kwahu-Praso police are said to be investigating the matter.
