Fake BNI Officer Bonded

A 19-year-old unemployed, Emmanuel Ayivo Edem, who allegedly pretended to be a Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) operative in a bid to date a second-year student of Cape Coast Polytechnic, has fallen foul of the law.

Edem, who appeared before a Cape Coast magistrate court presided over by Gloria Mensah Bonso, was charged with pretending to be a public officer.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and was made to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 24 months.

Edem, who wept uncontrollably at the court room, pleaded with the judge to forgive him since he only presented himself as a BNI officer to enable him establish a relationship with the complainant.

Prosecuting, Inspector Charles Effah said the complainant in the case is a second-year student of Cape Coast Polytechnic and the accused person resides in a private hostel at Amissahano, a suburb of Cape Coast.

Inspector Effah stated that in September 2015, Ayivo Edem gained admission into the polytechnic to pursue an HND programme in accountancy, but failed to register for the commencement of lectures between 26 and 29 January, 2016.

The prosecutor asserted that the accused presented himself as a BNI officer assigned by the Rector to investigate some financial malpractices in the accounts department of the institution.

Inspector Effah stated that the accused person was always moving around the school and sometimes entered examination halls while students were writing their papers.

Edem, the police officer said, later confronted the complainant and continuously requested for the receipt covering the payment of her school fees.

The prosecutor told the court that the complainant became suspicious about the moves of the accused person and reported the matter to the authorities of the polytechnic.

Inspector Effah said the security department was informed and surveillance was mounted on him, which led to his arrest.
