Eye Of The Lord Orphanage Closed Down….But Orphans, Proprietors Disappear

Officials of the Social Welfare Department, yesterday thronged the Otoase township in the eastern region to close down the contentious ‘Eye of the Lord Orphanage’ operated by one Samuel Darko Kwapong and his wife who have been accused of operating the orphanage without a license.

The social welfare team, together with other delegates from the office of the Eastern regional Minister, and the Gender and Social Protection Ministry, at about 1pm yesterday stormed the premises of the so called orphanage and ordered the proprietors to send back the kids ‘caged’ as orphans to their various homes.

After a heated confrontation between the officials and the proprietors, the former ordered that the kids whose parents came from the township should vacate the ‘orphanage’ and go back to their parents, assuring that if there were genuine orphans as claimed by some media houses, the Social Welfare Department was going to send them to a credible orphanage .

As they kept on with the confrontation, the wife of the blind proprietor insisted she would not allow the social welfare delegation to pick any of the kids from the premises.

“if you want to take them, take them away..take them to wherever you want to…you are not going to take any child from here…do you know how I have suffered….a jobless blind man like my husband has toiled so he can survive, and you want to come and destroy his labor…you must be joking ….you will see what I will do to you, I will show you where power lies.” the aggressive co-proprietor yelled.

The social welfare team who felt outweighed by the wife of Mr. Kwapong however called for assistance from the Nsawam Police Station, but before the police would arrive, the proprietors had disappeared with the kids.
