Ex-Soldier Commits Suicide

RESIDENTS OF Official Town, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, became crest-fallen when a 78-year-old ex-serviceman was said to have committed suicide with his shirt on Wednesday.

The lifeless body of the man was found hanging at the bathroom of his chamber-and-a-hall self-contained apartment at about 3:30 am near a popular spot – Alavanyo Chop Bar.

Vitus Gbekor Adababu, the ex-serviceman, was a lotto operator in the area.

Personnel from the Community 22 police station were informed about the incident and they rushed to the scene to convey the mortal remains to the Police Hospital in Accra for autopsy.

Daughter of the deceased, Peace Gbekor Adadabu, who spoke with DAILY GUIDE, explained that his father, who had a quiet demeanor and liked by many people in the area, was spotted hanging from his shirt when she woke up that dawn to pass water.

‘I quickly raised an alarm which attracted other family members and occupants in the house to the room. He was found hanging from his shirt which was fastened to the ceiling in the bathroom,’ she narrated.

Peace, who could not conjecture the reason for his father’s action, further noted that a fortnight before the incident, her father, who often slept together with her in the bedroom, asked her to sleep inside alone while he slept in the living room.

‘I am surprised at his action because he could have told me something before doing this. He often shares everything with me and he has no secret; and so for him to do this has left us in shock and pain,’ according to her.

She noted that prior to the death, her father complained of some illness and was sent to the hospital where he was treated and discharged.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the house that morning, the whole family was in a state of shock and mourning, with some people singing dirges to bid Vitus Gbekor Adababu farewell.
