Election Committee Wont Be Dissolved – EC

The Electoral Commission has said its 18-member National Election Steering Committee will not be dissolved in spite the objections being raised about it.

Pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) is pushing for the EC to dissolve the committee following revelations that a member owes allegiance to the ruling National Democratic Congress. The Peace Council chairman has also said it was not consulted on its nominee on the committee. The EC has however denied the claims by the Peace Council.

Speaking to Starr News, the director of Public Affairs of the EC Christian Owusu Parry said calls for the dissolution of the committee is premature.

“If you have issues with a member or two on the committee, it is not enough to dissolve the committee, there are 18 members and so just this issue or two is not enough to dissolve it.

“I disagree with the suggestion that one or two people are found to have political affiliation so the whole committee of 18 members should be dissolved, we disagree with it. And we think the most reasonable reaction is to deal with the persons you have concerns with then we move forward,” Owusu Parry told Keminni Amanor on the Starr Midday News Thursday.

The EC has constituted the 18-member steering committee to help ensure credibility in the November Presidential and parliamentary elections. Members of the committee were nominated by selected state institutions including the national service secretariat and the National Peace Council.
