Egbert Faibille Kicks Against Those ‘Turning History Upside Down’

Lawyer Egbert Faibille, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has kicked against those who are ‘turning history upside down’ and denigrating the memory of Ghana’s First President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The debate over the Founder of Modern Day Ghana still rages on as some are still not convinced that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was the true founder of Ghana.

Another issue which has become controversial as the country celebrates the 104th Birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is whether or not there was a ‘Big Six’ in the country’s history.

The Big Six per the country’s history were six leaders of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) who were detained by the colonial authorities following riots in 1948.

The six were made up of Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Kwame Nkrumah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey and William Ofori Atta.

Contributing to a panel discussion on Friday’s edition of ‘Kokrokoo’, Egbert said it is undisputable that there was a Big Six “and so the issue of a Big One is neither here nor there”.

“We will never allow them to revise Ghana’s history and also denigrate Kwame Nkrumah’s memory… Nkrumah’s biography even names the Big Six so how can any man born of a woman say that there is no Big Six. History cannot be revised… there is no rational basis for revision”

However, managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, speaking on the same platform disagrees. According to him, the big six came about because of the riots that occurred; however, after the six were arrested, five of them denied being part of organizing the riot.

“The historical evidence is that when they were arrested, 5 said they were not part of the organization. If the big six was formed because of the riots and five of them were saying they are not part, then they are not part of the big six and they themselves said they were not part of the big six… it was only Kwame Nkrumah who declared a positive action; there is no doubt about it. The other leaders said they were not part of positive action,” he added.
