While the rest of the country was glued to their television and radio sets to listen to the state of the nation address presented by President Mahama last Thursday, people in the Volta Region were prevented from hearing the speech.

This was because almost the entire region had power outage for a period longer than the normal load shedding arrangements by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This latest twist to the power situation in the region seemed to have annoyed the residents who wondered why they would be deprived of listening to the state of the nation’s address. Not even the radio station in Ho, the regional capital, was spared the outage.

A tour of the town during the delivery of the address showed residents going about their daily duties. Some people were able to listen to it through their mobile telephones and other gadgets that are not powered by electricity from ECG, while others monitored it in their vehicles.

Personnel of the ECG in Ho had profusely apologized and explained to DAILY GUIDE that the worrying power cut had been as a result of a  three-day routine maintenance.

The maintenance, which started from Wednesday, February 25, to Friday, February 27, 2015, resulted in the cutting of power supply from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm each day in the region and part of Ada.

The outage on Thursday had however, not gone well with some residents, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE . According to some of the residents, the maintenance works should have been suspended to enable them listen to the president’s address.

Ani Anku burst out, ‘If we could watch Black Stars during the AFCON without interruption, why should we be deprived of listening to the president?’

Another resident, Esi Amenu, noted that the power outage was enough to tell the region the true state of the nation. She said until the power situation had improved, any other promises are irrelevant.
