Director OJ: I Was Asked If I Was A Rep Of The Director Of Someone Special

2015 MTN 4syte MVA Best Directed Collaboration Video winner, Director OJ has lamented that recognition given to music video directors by music awards scheme organizers is overwhelmingly heartbreaking that “the presenters of the award plaque asked me if I were a representative receiving the plaque on behalf of Sarkodie or the maybe director.”

According to him, when ‘Special Someone’ by Sarkodie featuring Burna boy and AKA was announced as winner of the category; “Sarkodie insisted that I do the receiving as his way of appreciating my efforts, absolutely, the presenters of the award plaque didn’t know who I was as I walked towards them. Are you a rep? I was asked.”

“I couldn’t blame the presenter because the root of issue starts from the organizers so I took it, thanked them and moved on,” he bemoaned.

Addressing how music video directors are regarded in various music awards schemes; Director OJ indicated, “there are little or no attention given to video directors in these music awards schemes yet, there are brains behind the visual stories of the songs by these artistes.”

“And without these brains, there wouldn’t be any content in the visuals of the audio version of songs played likewise there wouldn’t have been any content for awards shows connected to music videos to even exist,” he said in an interview with

Asked how music video directors would appreciate to be recognized for their works; Director OJ said, “being recognized is a simple way of appreciating efforts one has invested in a project and these awards organizers can start appreciating to encourage creativity.”

Adding, “It will be better for the awards organizers because now, competition will drive itself among the directors and as well boast the interest of artistes to want to push creativity boundaries in order to be counted amongst the best and deserving for the awards.”

“My concerns are the general behavior of music awards schemes towards directors before, during and after the ceremony- this is what happens before, during and after the events; nominated directors will almost have to beg for tickets from organizers, which should never happen.

“Finally, you get a ticket and on the day of event, there are no proper assigned seating for Directors. And during the announcements of nominated videos, they never include the name of the Directors of the videos. It’s really bad. After the event, no follow up of even a small appreciating gesture for these Directors,” he howled.

Director OJ further motioned, “so if the artistes doesn’t mention your name as the director of the video during his speech; you don’t exist. And we have little to do with being known at these music awards.”

“It is the right of these organizers to include us behind the stories. That’s all. We don’t need money, just recognition because without content for these videos, no awards,” he argued. But “what we (directors) are doing wrong is not speaking on the issue.”

Director OJ won the Best Directed Collaboration Video category for Sarkodie’s ‘Special Someone’, which featured Burna Boy and AKA; a video shot a year ago in South Africa. Jayso produced the song.
