Check people advertising to write long essays for students – Prof Sakyi-Dawson

Develop a policy to counter malpractices in the education sector, that is a call from Prof. Esther Sakyi-Dawson, Director of Academic Quality Assurance at the University of Ghana.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana last Saturday expressed worry over the increasing spate of students using dishonest means to acquire degrees.

Prof Ernest Aryeetey said “there are far too many Ghanaians who claim to have certificates that they do not have…there are far too many Ghanaians in public spaces who have certificates they acquired illegitimately”.

Speaking on MultiTV’s AM Show on Monday, Prof. Sakyi-Dawson said cases of cheating students and plagiarism go beyond the individual universities adding there is a need for a policy direction to address the phenomenon.

She said the university may do its best but the trend is widespread.

According Prof. Sakyi-Dawson, another worrying trend is the incidence of people advertising that they can write long essays or thesis for students.

“So what are the policies that are in place that this cannot be allowed” she quizzed.

She added some students pay so much to let others write their dissertations only to find out the work is plagiarized.

The Academic Quality Assurance Director at the University of Ghana said “as lecturers we do know the writing style of our students, so when the student presents the work and it looks above their writing style, you can immediately tell”. She disclosed that people’s degrees have been taken away from them as a result of such acts.

She urged employers to do due diligence when hiring, disclosing “We have all these online unaccredited bogus universities who award degrees for absolutely no work done”.

She said if employers are not convinced about certificates employees present, they could send it back to the universities they claim they got them from.
