‘Blind’ children declared orphans due to neglect

Some children at the Akropong School for the Blind have been declared orphans due to neglect by their parents.

According to reports, from the day their parents brought them to the school, they have never stepped there to visit.

Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Mahela Narh disclosed this when she received donation of food items and toiletries with GHȼ5000 from Breast Care International and the Peace and Love hospital based in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

She indicated that the unpleasant reality has had a negative effect on the quality of life and social standing of the virtually impaired children.

The headmistress who nearly shed tears for the children said the school is forced to serve dual purposes for the about 400 children under their care.

Mrs. Narh also complained about the lack of logistics for effective teaching and learning and urged government, philanthropist and corporate bodies to come to their aid.

President of Breast Care International, Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai expressed shock at the conduct of the parents of the virtually impaired children.

She said being physically challenged is not a death sentence thus parents should be responsible and support them.

“The fact that these children are blind does not mean they cannot do anything or grow up to become the doctors, engineers and journalists; show them love” she stressed.

Dr. Wiafe Addai stated that the donation is part of their corporate social responsibility to help the school meet its daily needs.

Founder of the Peace and Love hospital added that the donation was not going to be the last since the special school needs very unique attention and support.
