Auditor Jailed For Stealing

A Tamale High Court One, presided over by Justice Jerome Noble Nkrumah, has sentenced a former Internal Auditor of Baobab Microfinance Company Limited, Awudu Abass to five years’ imprisonment for embezzlement.

About four years ago the management of the company detected some strange withdrawals from their systems but they least suspected their own internal auditor to be engaging in such criminal acts.  After a reasonable suspicion, the management engaged the services of external auditors to examine their books.

The external auditor’s findings revealed that about one hundred and fifty-nine thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 159,000) could not be accounted for.  But for the vigilance, the Baobab Microfinance Company’s operations would have ground to a halt and that would have adversely affected the hundreds of women engaged in small and medium-scale enterprises in the Northern Region the company provides financial support to.

Baobab also lends low interest loans to women in petty trading within its catchment area.

The General Manager of the Baobab Financial Services, Mr Sulemana Mansisu after the ruling told DAILY GUIDE that, the company was extremely shocked at the betrayal of the auditor.

According to him, the case has been pending in court for the past three to four years.

The former internal auditor, he explained, had been withdrawing money for his personal agenda; the act Mr. Mansisu said was unexpected and had affected the business.

Meanwhile measures had been put in place to curb repeat of the incident.
