Assin Fosu Centre Admits 250 Students

A colourful ceremony was held at the campuses of the Assin Fosu Vocational and Training Institute in the Assin North Municipality of the Central Region to admit 250 fresh students at the institute.

The trainees who have migrated from junior high schools would be made to do carpentry and joinery, block laying and concreting, general electrical, dressmaking, catering, motor vehicle mechanics and information communication technology (ICT).

Speaking at the third matriculation of the fresh trainees and fund raising programme, the manager of institute, F.A Gyimah, said vocational/technical education should be given recognition in the nation’s quest for its socio-economic development.

He added that ‘it is about time that vocational and technical institutions were resourced and well-positioned to meet the challenges posed by the ever-growing population. We need highly composed, smart and innovative persons to pursue the vocational and technical programmes as against the trivialised notion that the feather brain should rather be sent to vocational and technical institutions.’

Lack of classrooms and hostels, lack of good security arrangement, lack of school bus and poor road network were mentioned as some of the challenges confronting the institute.

The Director of National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Stephen B. Amponsah, hinted that countries that have achieved middle-income status paid particular attention to vocational and technical education without sacrificing grammar education.

‘Ghana has not reaped enough benefits from technical and vocational education because we have no deliberate policies to ensure that it becomes the birth place of small and medium scale enterprises,’ he said

Ing Amponsah urged the government to assist the institute to get more infrastructures to enable them to offer quality skill training to the youth.
