Apollo Concert Was ‘My’ Historic Achievement Sarkodie Tells Critics

Sarkodie has cleared the air about his #SarkodieHistoryInTheMaking Concert saying he was not seeking to steal anyone’s glory.

The Illuminati rapper was recently accused of distorting history, by former hiplife champ, Okyeame Quophi, who said the campaign – #SarkodieHistoryInTheMaking – was misleading.

In a facebook post a day after the concert, Quophi sought to clear the air about which Ghanaian artiste first performed at the Apollo Theater, saying he didn’t want Sarkodie’s claim of being the first, to distort history.

According to Quophi, Sarkodie is deliberately twisting the facts in his favour when it is a known fact that Akyeame performed on the prestigious stage together with Daddy Lumba in 1999.

But Sarkodie in an interview on Accra based radio, Y-FM on Thursday, said he is not seeking to cause mayhem.

“I never said I was the first person to perform at the Apollo. I was just saying the other day that it was history for me.

“If you get a picture opportunity with Jay Z and a year later I also get an opportunity to take a photo with him, that doesn’t mean because you did it I didn’t get my historic moment. I have also made history,” he stressed.

The Apollo Theatre in New York came alive on August 8, with a sold out concert organised by Sarkodie and his team featuring some of Ghana and Africa’s biggest stars including EL, Efya, Shatta Wale, Bisa Kdei and Nigeria’s Banky W.

Tagged #SarkodieHistoryInTheMaking, the stars thrilled patrons of the 1500 capacity hall to the best of their tunes.

Sarkodie in that interview also stated why performing at that venue was a big deal for him.

“I don’t think there’s so much difference between Apollo and our venues down here. No matter how you will like to downgrade what is here, it’s still yours and it’s still classy. If you look at National Theatre for instance, it’s almost the same as the Apollo. I think its way better, no it’s not way better but almost close to the Apollo. Just that Apollo has a name.

“And I think the reason why people are proud of the Apollo is the way they sell their tickets. You need to have fans who are devoted. Normally tickets are open to all fans to buy but with this you need to hustle. So it’s the hustle to get the tickets that makes it feel special to be at the Apollo.”
