Agogo Youth ‘ban’ all political activity until the last cattle leaves

Angry youth of Agogo have announced a self imposed ban on all political activities in protest over activities of nomads in the area.

The youth say they will not take part in “all political activities, be it funfairs, campaigns or rallies until the last cattle leaves Agogo.”

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the Agogo Youth Association, the youth also announced a boycott of all state functions and durbars including the upcoming Independence Day celebration.

Agogo has since 2007 become a hotbed of violence between natives and cattle rearing nomads.

The natives are accusing the nomads of killing their men, raping their women with their cattle grazing on their farmlands.

The nomads also tell a different story about how the natives have shot and killed their colleagues and their cattle.

Over the last few weeks the matter escalated with the killing of a 21-year-old man by men suspected to be nomads.

The natives have since sworn to either avenge the death of their colleague or protect themselves from future attacks.

As a result, men, women have armed themselves with guns even when they are going to their farms.

The issue has assumed national crisis with the Ashanti Regional Security Command as well as national security deploring men to the area to maintain peace.

But the youth of Agogo are in no mood to accept what they say is the discrimination in dealing with the matter.

They claim five of their members have been arrested and dumped into cells for allegedly attacking the nomads.

They want them released.
