8 injured; 21 arrested in bloody clashes in Upper West

Police in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa have arrested 21 people in connection with bloody clashes in the town earlier Tuesday.

At least eight people are said to have sustained machete and gunshot wounds in the clashes between residents of the Jejera-Yiri and Dondoli communities.

Correspondent Rafiq Salam said the two communities had been living peacefully until minor disagreement over a parcel of land turned chaotic.

Rafiq said the clashes which began Sunday appeared to have some religious undertones.

Four of the eight victims are said to be in critical condition having sustained serious gunshot and machete wounds.

According to Salam, five pellets are yet to be removed from one of the victims.

Three other victims have, however, been discharged.

The Regional Minister, Amin Amidu Sulemana has visited the two communities to appeal to the feuding factions to smoke the peace pipe.

Having been Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt at one point in his political career, the minister said violence was never the way to resolve disagreements.

He appealed to the feuding factions to let peace prevail.

Meanwhile, security personnel in the Wa township have promised to keep the peace in the area.
